I haven’t been writing here, because there is a lot to do outside! It’s gorgeous, and there’s planting to be done, and when I’m not working and it’s light outside, the place to be is with the sheep, reveling in the lambs.
We’re two thirds of the way complete with lambing season right now, which means the twenty-one lambs are ten days old or less and there are probably ten more lambs coming. Our pasture is full of infants! Welcoming somebody on their first day of life is a reminder of the goodness of the world, as is sitting in the paddock and watching them nap and drink milk and dance. I like to imagine that we could build a world where us humans got to lead lives as easeful and earnest as a sheep’s—all our needs provided by the earth and the collective, attuned to our instincts, ruminating in the grass.
All that to say: if you’re local to Decorah, we’re having a lamb open house this Sunday, Mother’s day, from 5 to 7—hopefully catching the tail end of naptime and then zoomy hour. All ages welcome to admire and snuggle!
Thanks for sharing this, Hannah! We’re renting land to local shepherds and revel in the tail waggling and group play of the lambs too. It’s a joy to behold and balm to the soul. ❤️
